The Journey to Salon Ownership: Embracing Leadership and Continuous Growth

As a hairstylist, the path to salon ownership is often paved with dreams, hard work, and a dash of daring. Today, we’re diving into the story of Danielle Sprando, a stylist from Gresham, Oregon, who recently took the leap into salon ownership and is navigating the exciting waters of entrepreneurship.

Danielle’s journey with Natural Beaded Rows (NBR) began in 2018 when she attended BMS Con, a convention that opened her eyes to the potential of NBR extensions. However, it wasn’t until 2022 that she decided to fully immerse herself in the NBR Academy, a decision that would ultimately lead her to open her own salon.

The NBR Academy is more than just a training ground for mastering the art of hair extensions; it’s a comprehensive program that blends the intricacies of NBR with essential business, marketing, and sales education. 

For Danielle, the academy was a game-changer, providing her with the systems and processes she needed to transition from stylist to salon owner.

In January 2024, Danielle’s salon opened its doors, marking the beginning of a new chapter. With two apprentices under her wing, she’s now focused on honing her leadership skills and ensuring her team is equipped with the knowledge and expertise to provide top-tier services. Her goal is to transition from working four days to three, allowing her apprentices to take on more responsibilities and clients.

One of the key challenges Danielle faces is communication. As any seasoned salon owner knows, there’s no such thing as over-communication. It’s crucial to be explicit with instructions and expectations, especially when training new talent. Danielle is learning to navigate this by asking her apprentices what they’ve learned at the end of each day and ensuring they’re comfortable with various tasks, from styling to color application.

To ease her apprentices into working with clients, Danielle plans to implement model calls, allowing them to practice and refine their skills in a real-world setting. 

This step is vital in building their confidence and ensuring they’re ready to handle clients independently.

As Danielle continues to grow her salon, she’s also committed to her own personal and professional development.

Danielle K. White shared that she is currently reading “The Gap and The Gain,” a book that emphasizes the importance of living in the present and appreciating the journey, not just the destination. This mindset is helping her balance the drive for continuous growth with gratitude for her current achievements.
