Supporting Your Clients Through Hair Loss

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can lead to increased hair growth and reduced shedding. Exciting right?!

However, the reality is that postpartum hair loss often follows.

While pregnancy can bring about a temporary boost in hair thickness and volume, it’s essential to educate your clients about the shedding that can occur!

Knowing this hair loss is common after giving birth allows you to educate your clients and change their routines to minimize hair loss.

I had experienced postpartum hair loss with all four of my pregnancies.

But with my third baby, Isla, I experienced the most severe case, losing over half of my hair.

Around the time Isla turned three months old, I noticed even more hair falling out.

The experience was not only alarming but also emotionally distressing! I remember those heart-wrenching moments when handfuls of hair would come out with each wash and brush stroke.

Although I know that postpartum hair loss is a hormonal phenomenon, I couldn’t comprehend why it was more intense this time.

Throughout my pregnancy, I dealt with health complications such as Deep Vein Thrombosis and severe anxiety caused by the DVT. I also developed Preeclampsia, which led to an early induction three and a half weeks before my due date.

The extent of my hair loss during postpartum was shocking.

As the creator of NBR and someone who has worn extensions for as long as I can remember, my decreased amount of hair to attach extensions to became my worst nightmare.

Overwhelmed by panic, I researched potential solutions for hair regrowth, including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and various vitamins.

After a month of shedding and thorough research, I began noticing new hair growth thanks to a few supplements I had incorporated into my routine.

Seeing my hair steadily regrow, I decided against pursuing PRP and focused on consistency with the supplements to maximize the results. Nutrafol, Vital Proteins, and Dotera lifelong vitality emerged as the main supplements that helped me regain hair.

Five months later, my hair had grown back and became even thicker than before my pregnancy with Isla.

Although I still faced the challenge of blending my little toddler bangs with her longer ones, I was so happy that I was able to wear hair extensions without any issues throughout the whole journey.

Having encountered numerous women experiencing postpartum hair loss at my salon, I always empathize with their concerns and fears about visiting a salon with limited hair, especially when hair extensions have gotten such a bad rep over damaging the natural hair.

It’s important for clients to find a  professional specializing in hair extensions, specifically those experienced in caring for fine hair, and continue to invest in their education!

Women can find the support and guidance they need during this delicate hair regrowth phase by choosing knowledgeable and skilled hairstylists.

Understanding the struggles faced by clients dealing with postpartum hair loss can be immensely valuable for hairstylists!

By educating yourself as an Artist and knowing the right solutions, you can provide your clients with the confidence and comfort they seek. (and a couple of rows of NBR never hurts!)
