In today’s digital age, marketing as a Stylist looks a lot different than it used to; we’re no longer waiting around in salons for clients to just “walk in”.
In an effort to reach a broader audience, social media marketing is your secret weapon.
But how do you even start? What if you don’t see results?
This blog post explores the journey of an expert hair stylist, turned Licensed NBR Artist Lindsey Koutz, as she shares her experience and growth as a social media marketer committed to growing her business.
Let me take you back to the beginning. I spent a whopping two decades as a passionate hairdresser.
Back then, my marketing strategy was as old-school as it gets – handing out business cards on street corners trying to drum up new clients.
It worked, but I knew it was time to enter the modern age.
Now, let me tell you about the excitement that filled me when I first ventured into social media marketing.
I genuinely believed that merely creating content and putting myself out there would instantly transform my life.
But reality hit hard, and the results didn’t match my expectations. Like many of you, I faced disappointment.
The truth is that success in marketing requires something we often underestimate – time and persistence.
It’s natural to feel discouraged when results don’t appear immediately, but that’s when you must keep pushing forward.
Embracing the “70% Rule”
One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is the importance of dedicating a significant portion of your time to marketing. Initially, the idea of spending 70% of my time on marketing felt overwhelming.
But then came the COVID-19 pandemic, and I suddenly found myself with extra time.
I directed my energy toward marketing since I was prohibited from working with guests, and guess what?
I discovered the power of focused marketing!
I made the exact same amount of money in 7 months that I made the previous year working 12 months! 😱
Understanding your audience is pure gold in marketing.
Rather than crafting an ideal client that feels disconnected, think about your target market as people who are a lot like you.
Attract clients who resonate with your personality and style.
When creating social media content, I learned to keep it relatable.
Write and speak as if you’re casually chatting with a friend.
Authenticity is everything; your genuine tone will connect with like-minded individuals who could become your cherished clients.
Here’s a little secret: You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time you sit down to create content.
Take one core idea and transform it into multiple posts, continuing the same conversations.
Take a reel and turn it into a carousel; use a tutorial and write out the instructions step by step as a text post.
You should be communicating the same message over and over again; this will help convert your leads and show your audience why you are the Artist to deliver the solution to their problems; you are the expert!
Social media should be enjoyable, both for you and your audience. If you’re having fun creating posts and engaging with your followers, that enthusiasm will shine through.
In the ever-changing world of social media marketing, setbacks and challenges are all part of the ride.
However, by dedicating time, understanding your audience, and persevering, you can definitely find success.
So, take these lessons from my personal journey and apply them to your social media efforts.
Your success might just be a few consistent posts away.
